Animation is born of sketches. The best drawings, characters and even series and movie franchises can trace their roots to an occasional sketch on a bar napkin or the corner of a notepad.
Intentional or otherwise, a sketch can also help the artist work out the faults of a character and design the best elements of a style.
As most animators can tell you, life drawings are very important in understanding how figures and natural shapes can be imitated in two dimensions.
Below, you can find many examples of styles, characters and even life drawings born of the imagination. Some of these have been fully developed into animated shorts, illustrations and in some cases publication. Others are works in progress, future works and some are just doodles.
